State Declamation 2016

About 485 students from across Alaska recently demonstrated their skills in the Alaska State Activities Association’s World Language Declamation Competition.

Students studying another language compete in recitation of poetry, speak spontaneously in solo or team events, and show off culture trivia knowledge in the languages of study. Students competed in six different languages: Chinese, French, German, Japanese, Latin and Spanish.

Winners from regional competitions held earlier this month in Anchorage, Fairbanks, Mat-Su, Unalaska and Nome competed at the state competition on Feb. 27 at South Anchorage High School.

Prior to the statewide awards ceremony, participants and guests were treated to international entertainment, including performances by Tomodachi Daiko, Anchorage’s premier taiko drumming group, and Bartlett High School’s Chinese language students.

More than 150 volunteers, made up of ASD staff, South High students and community members, helped run the competition.  ASD German teachers Elizabeth Dick of South Anchorage High School and Kristi Senden of Chugiak High School coordinated the competition with support from Deanna Montagna of ASAA.
